Christopher Chambers was born in Sudbourne, Suffolk in 1880 (Plomesgate Q4-1880 4a:725), son of William and Alice CHAMBERS (née WRIGHT ).
1881 census...Aged 3 months, he was at Ferry Farm, Sudbourne, with his father William CHAMBERS [39] a farmer, born Denton, Norfolk; his mother Alice [34] born Ilketshall, Suffolk; brothers William [11], Charles [10] and Walter, sisters Annie [8] and Ellen [4] (all born in Sweffling, Suffolk) and sister Gertrude [3] born in Sudbourne. 1891 census...Aged 10, he was still at Ferry Farm, Sudbourne with his parents, brother William (farmers son) and Wlter (auctioneers clerk), sisters Ellen, Gertrude and Bessie [8] and brother Martin [6]. 1901 census...Aged 20, he was at Hall Farm, New Road, Marlesford with his parents, sister Ellen and brother Martin. 1911 census... Aged 30, still single, he was a farm bailiff at Longholes Farm, Cheveley. His parents, sister Ellen and brother Martin were still in Marlesford. The only chance of a Woodditton connection may be that he was lodging in Woodditton when working at Longholes Farm (which is now Longholes Stud and Sandwich Stud. He may course have moved to a Woodditton farm. He is the only man found with any connection close to Woodditton. |

He enlisted in Bury St Edmunds. The 15th Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment, as the Yeomanry Battalion, went to Gallipoli in September 1915, and after the withdrawal were sent to Egypt. They moved to France in May 1918. On the 18th September 1918 they attacked on a front of about 18 miles between Gouzeaucourt and Holnon, sweeping through Templeux and over the Quarries. Practically all objectives were gained for the cost of 6 killed, including Christopher. |
